Vtg Stencil Italy No. 2
The Italien Way
The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real-world stencils from various countries. The Italian stencils are roughly based on the classic French stencil letters — please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made using a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punched into the plates — perhaps they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and a little clumsy, and when the stencils are used as intended, smaller details tend to fade away.
In Italy, unlike in France, these stencils are more likely to be found in the maritime environment — on boats and in harbours, on beach accesses, and sometimes on campsites and kiosks.
These stencils (STAMPI TRAFORATI LETTERE, STAMPI ALFABETO LAMIERA) can be purchased from Italian naval metal shops or from Brico. You will notice that the width of the stencil sets varies with the size range of the stencil set sizes.
We took the liberty of designing a font close to the original design, but added some typographic tweaks to make it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils.
Enjoy the vintage!
